The toast of Mayfair.

Christopher Isherwood was the creator of Sally. From the horses mouth of how he wanted to portray Sally.

She had a surprisingly deep, husky voice. She sang badly, without any expression, her hands hanging down at her sides – yet her performance was, in its own way, effective because of her startling appearance and her air of not caring a curse of what people thought of her…

Sally Bowles moodbard.

My moodboard is inspired by an iinfluential person f the 1920s/30s who I elt porttraed my carecter in mnay ways. Brenda Dean Paul. She was notrousily famous for her struggle with cocaine like Sally she was British and moved to Berlin in ope to launch her career as an actress. She acted in ana obscene way getting her noticed by tabloids. Brenda like Sally would go partying at a drop of a pin. Her look is sophisticated and strong.I was inspired by her hair and strong cheekbones. Her dark lips and thin brows. She just looks michevious. I want to create smokey green metallic eyes. Why green? Green is Sallys faveroiate olour it gets people geusing and attracts attention to herself on stage the lights reflect off it. It shows she is rebelling from the norm as no one else would dare wear the colour of toxic green.

"she is in her early twenties, rather pretty, rather sophisticated, rather child-like,exasperating and irresitable."

Sally Bowles a 21 year old woman. Full of ambition and dreams to become a famous actress. She chooses to get by with her talent, whit and sultry eyes. Sally doesn't walk sally into a room, Sally makes every move a performance. She strides into the room with her head held high and her bestfriend "issywoo" following. Sally uses extremely British vocabulary using words such as "divine" and "darling". Sally uses her arostotic connections to get by socially in Berlin her undeniable English charm gets her noticed. Sally dresses well. Her clothes hang off her skeletal long figure. As she walks past you can hear the heavy beads and sequins clatter together like a pocketful of coins. Sally wears a strong scent of whisky and worcester sauce. Her hair is brunette bobbed with messy pin curls almost as though someone has been ruffling their hands through her hair. Sally wears a pale complexion and heavy smokey eyes. Her lips always look as though they have been  pinched together. Sally wears a wide smile and pearls.

Sally sometimes takes pride in her appearance before she performs. Her makeup is her persona her mask. Sally wears a pale matte complexion. She lays in bed in the day and performs or parties at night. Sally is a disorientated person. She often wakes up in a unfamiliar room. she often runs late therefore has to rush to get ready. Sally has noticeably dark brows in comparison to her face. She has strong brows that counter act with her facial expressions. A deep plum lip the compliments her emerald nails and dark purple smokey eyes. Her nose is often snuffling, so she always has red around her nose that makeup cannot hide. Sally usually snorts what she likes to call her "joy powder" before a big performance she says it gives her a "divine" feeling that just makes her want to dance. Her eyes are wide and bright and sultry.

Presentation.

Today I presented my character to my class. I didn't really prepare what I was going to say during presenting and literally froze. Sharon gave me some critical feedback making me realise that I had not really considered who I wanted my character to be from my research. I then went back did more research on British youth culture of the era and discovered the character I wanted to create. So getting negative feedback on my presentation helped realise that I had not really thought about who my character is.

Cocaine was one of the choices of drugs used in the 1920's. Cocaine is often associated with the jazz age 1920s-30s. Cocaine the drug known to suppress appitites and make users lose their inhibitions. "Initially thought to be a wonder drug, in the late 19th century cocaine was a key ingredient in medicines used to combat asthma, dysentery, sore nipples, syphilis and – ironically – to fight opium addiction"(http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/event/article-2356212/Cocaine-Reading-lines-The-history-drug.html#ixzz3HZs34xWl" )

Cocaine was used as a party drug to give the user a 30 minute burst of euphoria. It was aid that mainly prostitutes, and artists. those of the creative industry used it. Perhaps that is why the art movement changed to be so abstract and expressionistic? Cocaine can intensify your five senses. A lot of the youth used to take cocaine it was often used at after parties. Many women had small compacts to keep their cocaine in.

The cocaine scene exploded after the first world war. Berlin became the capital of cocaine use in the 1920s/30s. People from all over the world visited Berlin to experience the new nightlife experience. Sex, drugs and cabarets was what Berlin was about during the "roaring twenties".

I want my character to show this lifestyle through her hair and makeup.

Brenda Dean Paul

Brenda Dean Paul was a British socialite and silent film actress. She cam from an upper-class background. She was a member of "The Bright Young Things". Brenda was known as being "a drug celebrity". She was the 1930's British bad girl. Her constant use of illegal drugs such as heroin and cocaine landed her in court and in Holloway prison . Brenda played small roles in many films, she then traveled to Berlin to further her career in acting. She was sucked into Berlins hectic nightlife which fueled her dependence on drugs.

February 1931 Brenda Dean Paul made her first court appearance, having been charged with bouncing a cheque. The following decades saw her in and out of various courts, receiving sentences of up to six months in prison for possession of dangerous drugs, obtaining goods on false pretences, and theft of services (refusing to pay taxi drivers). With each court appearance her name appeared in the papers, which added to her notoriety.
In 1932 she was sent to Holloway prision, where she developed bulimia, dropping to five stone (70 lb). Over the next few years she was in and out of nursing and care homes.
In 1935 she somehow managed to go quit drugs and her ghost-written memoir, My First Life, was published. Her acting ambitions never came to anything and she again fell victim to drug addiction. In 1939 she was evicted from her flat because she "walked about naked" and "answered the door in the nude", and in 1940 she was tried for buying goods on other people's accounts.

Brenda has heavy looking sort of eyes. Her eyes always look sultry. Yet she looks a though she is looking at you but is not sure what she is looking at. I love her dark mysterious lips, liner and long lashes the look is not too over the top which is not what I would of expected. Her hair is bobbed dark with pincurls. She looks sophisticated and rather pretty. Like how Joe Masteroff describes Sally. She is such an inspiration as I can link so much of her behavior and some of her looks to Sally.

I found this video to be extremely insightful It is just a brief video of Brendas life. It is filmed in a stylistic modern way, yet with historical tendencies.

The Bright Young Things. The great expression

"The Bright Young Things" were a memorbale group of socialites from England.“The Roaring Twenties was an era of clinking glasses, clattering automobiles, and big, brassy jazz tunes. Flappers—donning low-cut necklines and close-cropped bobs—smoked cigarettes and sipped cocktails .” (Alison maloney,The Bright Young Things 2013)

Site:www.dougandjean.blogspot.com

The Bright young things were flamboyant, outrageous, promiscuous, savvy, decadent, rebellious and extremely wealthy youth of the 20's-30s. They were the creators of the celebrity cult. They were the creators of club culture. When they partied they partied hard. They drank extreme measurements of alcohol and experimented with every drug under the sun. If there was a party worth talking about they were there making the headlines of the tabloid. For how glamorous their outfits were.

The tabloids loved to talk about them in the gossip columns speaking of how shocking their behavior was. They were the younger generation aristocracy  and middle class who chose to advance their careers through association.

The Bright Young things perhaps rebelled against their decades values as they survived the war could this be their way of celebrating constant partying. Possibly their attitudes began to change as many males died in the war resulting in more women; giving women an opportunity to seize to be independent and powerful. These young woman captured the opportunity to be seen as something other than a tamed, pretty housewife, baby maker. It's time for a change.

Woman began to chop off their locks, pull their skirts up, smear on lipstick, drink excessively and experiment with their sexuality. The 20's was a time for self expression, if anyone expressed themselves it was this decadent group.

Amazingly, it all started with well-bred, modern young girls and their ‘treasure hunts’ around London using the public transport system; buses, trams and tubes. They chased around London, running and shouting and generally making a spectacle of themselves. This in turn led to young men becoming involved and the Bright Young Things took to treasure hunting in fast cars, roaring around the countryside.
These treasure or scavenger hunts evolved further, into weekend house parties, stunt parties and theatrical fancy dress parties. ‘Bring a Bottle’ parties were invented by the Bright Young Things at university in Oxford and Cambridge, as money was often tight for many of the students whose aristocratic families had been hit by death duties and taxes after the War.
The group would dance to jazz and drink the night away. They took drugs such as hashish, cocaine and heroine which fueled their barbaric behavior even more. They even had their own slang the word "darling" was a popular choice along with "divine".

The most popular amongst The Bright Young Things were Stephen Tenannt  the youngest son of the Earl of Glenconnor,  he was born in 1906.He was known for being outrageous in both his clothes and behaviour, it was said he spent most of his life in bed. His style was imaginative, rather like that of Boy George or David Bowie in the late 20th century. He was constantly pursued by the paparazzi. Nancy Mitford, herself one of the party set, is thought to have based the character Cedric in her novel ‘Love in a Cold Climate’ on Stephen.
The "it girl" of the group Elizabeth Ponosonby who loved nothing more than a party sh reportedly drank herself to her death before she hit 40. Brenda Dean Paul was named the "drug addict" of the group by the tabloid papers.

The Bright Young Things are a group of youths from the twenties who socialise, go to events and set trends; they were an instrument of increasing sales. They appear in gossip columns of newspapers like the New York times; Often showcasing the latest perfume or lipstick. The Bright young things communicated the values of the generation which are extremely similar to the twenty first century values.  These people Partying to isolate their surrounding problems. Impressive makeup is worn by the bourgeoisie often posted in newspapers in the gossip columns. This often resulted in an increase of sales. Being photographed in a dark lipstick and to have it being published meant that a trend was set. The Bright Young Things were like the Kardashians of the twenties. They were the celebrity culture showing cultural change through social media. Drugs and illegal alcohol was consumed at the parties like many youths experiment with today. Capturing the essence of happiness and living for the moment.

Point of return.

I have decided to change my idea. As I do not feel as though my idea was strong enough. i had not thought about my character enough. I n0w feel totally inspired but another idea.

The Dancer Anita Berber.

The piece "The Dancer Anita Berber" was painted by pronowned artist Otto  Dix in 1925. The artist painted Anita in Paris. It was said that Dix was not keen on the colour red. Yet he used it in Anitas portrait. Why? Red is associated with being sexy. Red is the colour of love, rubies, venus and sex. Which of course Anita was desirable.Otto painted Anita when she was 26 so she would/ve still had young skin and styles such as short hair. As older women tended to have longer hair.

Anitas hair.

Analysing this image I can see Anita sported the iconic bob. Her hair has been tightly pin curled and almost looks as though it has been ruffled with. Her makeup look as as though she is wearing a smokey and a dark lip with pale skin.

I have looked up a few more images of Anita and her hair is usually styled in a similar way or with a scarf on top of the head with curls poking out of the bottom of the hair.

Anita Face charts.

For my first face chart I knew how I visualized Anita. I wanted to her to be portrayed as she would've looked. Not of how she thought she would've looked. Anita was known to think quite high of herself, but I wanted to create a realistic vision. I chose simple makeup considering the time limit. I kept the skin pale, with a pinch of colour in the cheeks and a strong red lip.

Product list.

  • Illamsqua Matte primer.
  • Dior Forever foundation 002.
  • MAC Studio fix concealer NC15.
  • Kroylan flamingo blush.
  • Illamsqua Translucent powder.
  • Black matte powder MUA.
  • MAC Khol pencil Black.
  • MUA Boom lash mascara Black.
  • Kryolan Black shadow.
  • Kroylan LCOO8 lip shade.
For my second face chart I kept the exact same products. As I liked my design but reconsidered the design. I asked myself the question what would Anita really look like from my perspective? She most defiantly would not of had the latest luxury hair blending brush to smoke out that eye. Would she of even taken her makeup off? She was known for being very promiscuous. Her lips would of been smudged from snogging a man back stage before her show. She would of rubber her fingers into the eye shadow and rubbed it onto her lids. I want to be realistic and show her how many would of perceived her.

I used the colour black as black is dramatic, mysterious and sexy. Black will make the eyes pop. Anita was known for being erotic and behaving in a dramatic way which is the explanation to my colour choice.I chose a red for the lips as red can connotate energy, danger and is also perceived as being sensual as of which Anita was all of these.

Hair.

For the hair I find it easier to create the style first then do a hair chart. Firstly I pin cured the hair. I then twisted the hair and rolled it under the hair and pinned the hair with hair pins. I have taken into consideration that human hair is a lot thicker and heavier. Therefore I experimented with using a hair doughnut of which I cut in half.
I then rolled the hair under the doughnut, towards the nape of the neck. I then used hair grips to secure it.

I then decided to play around with the scarf on the head look that Anita wore. I created it by creating a faux bob, then pin curled the ends. I then placed the scarf on top of the head like Anita wore hers. I believe this look will fit into the time given better. I also would like to use this design. As head was known to be worn at night, my Anita is performing in the evening and has rushed to get ready. Leaving the scarf on shows that she may not of had enough time to style her whole head so she has thrown a scarf on top of her head.

Face charts.

I have decided to begin to design a few face charts to see what direction my concepts are heading towards. I now know what scene I am creating Sally from. I have chosen Act One-Scene Four in the script. Where Cliff and Sally first meet. It is New years eve in the club. I have based my makeup on the event, time of day, era, the fact that she is performing and her character traits of how I would like her to be perceived.

 Product list.

  • Primer-Illamasqua Satin primer.
  • Foundation Dior forever shade 002.
  • Concealer MAC Studio fix NC15.
  • Powder-Illamasqua translucent powder.
  • Kroylan blush-flamingo.
  • MUA Smokin pallete Dark green.
  • kroylan Charcoal.
  • Matte brown brows.
  • Mua Boom lash.
  • MAC Chilli lips.
I chose this particular makeup. As Sally was known for wearing green to get across the message that she was rebellious and it attracted attention to her as people question the colour selection. Smokey eyes is often portrayed as a sensual look. I want thin straight brows as not only was this on trend but was very Theda Bara it was a dramatic eye catching brow. That I feel will add to Sallys strong personality.  A Strong brow says a lot about someone. I want the blusher to not only add a bit of colour to the cheeks but when the lights on stage shine down on her this will add dramatic shadows to the face because of where I am placing the blusher. I chose deep red lips as not only does this scream siren, it conntotates desire, and being ripe. "This is her time to shine". I have made sure the lips are in a pointed shape so they look like a pout, the perfect kissing shape. Not only are the lips dramatic but they were also very much on trend.

 Product list.

  • Illamasqua matte primer.
  • Dior forever shade 002.
  • Concealer MAC Studio fix NC15.
  • Illmasqua loose powder.
  • Kroylan blush Flamingo.
    • MUA Smokin pallete black,green.
    • MAC olive.
    • MAC pigment Golden olive.
    • MUA boom lash mascara.
    • Rimmel liner.
    • Midnight plum lip liner.
    • MAC Captive.
Although this look may be similar to my first face chart I sort of have this vision in my head of how I want my character to look which is why they are similar. I have again gone for a pale matte complexion and a green smokey eye. But this time I have added a glitter pigment. Not only does this make the colour more intense but it also adds texture. It New years eve and celebrate an event us girls usually like to look a little different we way go over the top. I wanted to add glitter on the eyes as not only is this dramatic stage makeup but is glamorous and the concept behind it is the audience is like a mirror as I perceive Sally as being selfish, when you look in the mirror and see your reflection you see yourself. I feel that's how Sally sees herself especially in the film she does a lot to please herself she is also a rather lonely character as she's a "right now" woman not one you would want to settle down with. perhaps conveying the message " all that glitters isn't gold". Speaking of money also Money may shine but it is not everything in life I feel Sally charecter begins to explore this. Especially when her wealthy lover leaves her for another. Leaves her money to make up for it. I hose green for the eyes as green is the colour of money, envy, and poison. I chose rounded brows as I feel these look a lot softer and suit the look I am going for. I chose to place a beauty spot under the eyes as I feel it makes the face look more feminine and draws attention to the eyes. I have used plum lips as not only was plum on trend it also can symbolize extravagance and mystery.

    Product list.

    • Illamasqua matte primer.
    • Dior forever shade 002.
    • Concealer MAC Studio fix NC15.
    • Illmasqua loose powder.
    • Kroylan blush Flamingo.
      • MUA Smokin pallete black,green.
      • MAC olive.
      • MUA boom lash mascara.
      • Rimmel liner.
      • Midnight plum lip liner.
      • MAC Captive.
Here I wanted to transfer my last face chart onto my face as it is the more basic look of the chart. I felt as though the colours work well together but will dramatize it more for my creation of Sally. From this simple makeup look I can develop my ideas further now I have a better vision of how the colours will look.

      Sally Bowles moodboard.

Here is a moodboard I created for my Sally Bowles character. I used 20's inspired makeup looks, and original 20's makeup looks. I used the inevitable green nail varnish as this is my starting point t Sally. Clothing of which I feel she may of worn. Pearls to connotate her sophisticated side of which Joe Masteroff describes her as. I used art deco and different textures which may help to inspire me to play with certain textures for my look.

      Hair in the 20's.

In the 20's there was many hair fads. Ellie Laubner. (1996). Hair and Headgear. In: Laubner E Fashion of the roaring 20's and values.. Atglen: Schiffer Publishing Ltd. 83-99.

      Earphones.

      www.1920s-fashion-and-music.com
The first couple of years of the decade. The hair style known now as the earphones was very fashionable. The hair was twisted into two buns both covering the ears.

      The Bob.

      site:www.shoomp.com
      viewed:24/10/2014
The bob was rather a blunt cut which was level with the ears. The hair was worn either with a fringe or a side parting. Even the lead fashion designer of "Coco Chanel wore her hair i this cut. Many women felt compelled to wear their hair this way to suit the fashionable head hugging hats that came into style. Having short hair was also a way of rebelling against society's ideology of a how a woman should be. Woman began to find their own voices and started making their own money. Short hair accommodated with short skirts soon became the new fashion.

      Shingle.

The shingle was known as being a more sophisticated cut. The hair would taper into a V shape at the nape of the neck, with either spit curls or waves.

      Finger waves.

      site:Becuo.com
      Viewed:24/10/2014

Finger waves were another great option of hair style. It looked classy and fmeinie. It created amazing texture to suit the bob. It also looks great on long hair too. Finger waves were created using wet hair where lotion was applied. The hair was then combed to the left where it was held firmly with a finger. The hair below the finger was then combed to the right. They would then change fingers after repeating this the hair was then placed into a hair net to dry.

      Chignon.

      Site:www.vintagedancer.com

Those who had longer hair often wore the style chignon. They would created glossy waves which were then pulled back behind the ears. The hair was then coiled into a chignon or knot at the nape of the neck. This was supposed to resemble a wavy bob.

      Makeup in the 20's

During the 1920's makeup became more fashionable than ever. Makeup was used as a way to play with ones persona and to express yourself. In the 1920s women were fighting for their right to be seen as equal.  the Flapper look came into fashion and with it came cosmetics: Dark kohl eyes,Red lipstick, Red nail polish and it was fashionable for women to use bleach to keep their skin a pale milky white – in otherwords a good palette for cosmetics ! Plum and dark reds were often worn.

      • Eyes – kohled eyeshadow for the more daring girls
      • Eyebrows – Plucked for the first time and drawn downward towards the temple.
      • Lips – lips were smaller than the natural outline and fashioned into the ‘cupid’s bow’ shape.
      • Lashes – mascara was the new rage and no woman could resist enhancing her lashes.
      • Rouge – Applied in circles rather than angular. The effect was a rounded face.
      • Nails – The big name was Revlon and the popular style was the ‘moon manicure’ leaving the tip in painted.

I also looked at 20's vogue illustrations to get an ideal of the fashionistas hair and makeup. In the image below I can see that red hair seemed to be quite the look. As a few German icons had red bobbed hair much like this woman in this illustration I can see that green is a statement color on the image, could this mean that she to is rebelling against society much like Sally Bowles. Her hair has been curled. She is wearing what looks like green pearls of which I found to be interesting. She looks as though she is draped in fur perhaps showing status. She has fair skin, pinched cheeks and red lips. Her brows look thin and straight. From these images I can see what the ideal beauty was meant to look like,

Above are a few images that I put together of real 20's women. I can see the clear trends as listed above. The brows and lips seems to be the main focus. This is something I can experiment with brow shapes to convey my characters characteristics.

      Post 11

      "rather pretty,rather sophisticated,rather child-like, exasperating and irresistible"(Act one, scene four, page 16)

From this I can imagine the makeup being very over the top form the word exasperating. A lot of eye makeup, heavy lips, and skin. Maybe different textures such as glitter as that is very much in your face. Heavy makeup can also decode as showing her childish side. You could show it through adornments such as pearl necklaces as these were seen as perhaps sophisticated. Could make her makeup playful like a child by using colours other than black to create a smokey eye, big outwards flicks. Plum lips showing her sophisticated side, with sophisticated hair.

Make-up & hair for the scene.

If I could design the makeup for this scene I would make it rather heavy and glamorous so she would not be forgotten like an unforgettable smokey eye making her look 'doe eyed' and berry lips against pale skin. Creating a beautiful contrast. Something that would make her features stand out. Thin high brows and pinched lips. Pale as it is winter, Sally also has not eaten in a few days. Her face is thin due to a suppressed appetite from feeding off drugs. Deep plum lips not only was it on trend but looks almost vampy and mysterious and is hard to read unlike red.

The hair I would have it in a voluminous curled bob, with a gold head ban on with a feather coming from it that way it would portray her energetic character, the feather is childlike but the big curled hair is sensual, and attractive. Someone has given her a goodluck kiss therefore her hair is slightly ruffled. Sally is in a rush to get ready therefore her hair and makeup is not perfect. Sally does not have time for final touchups.

Actioning the text, verb that describes the actions of your character in that scene.

Enters. This is the scene that we meet Sally. She is described as "rather pretty, rather sophisticated".  It sounds sort of dramatic she enters, the star the main character. She makes a big entrance performing on stage seducing the audience. She is the star of the scene. Speaking to whom she wants knowing they'll be interested. I chose the word enters as Sally makes a marvelous entrance. A performance of an entrance, she shows she is sexy, fun, and wild. Sally slowly sashes towards the stage. Her heavy, sultry eyes make intense contact with every male and female voyuerist in the audience. But her eyes only connect to one, Cliff. Her body moves slowly and eroticly around the dancers making her entrance to the front. The audience feel as though t is just them and Sally in the room. Why slowly? Sallys body is feeling some intense euphoric feeling after her cocaine. She moves her arms dramatically. The way she moves entices the audience.

      site:www.piniterest.com
      site:17/11/2014

What will happen if they if they don't get it?

If Sally does not have her way with Cliff, then she will not get any money from him. If they slept together then their relationship may of not grown into a strong friendship. Possibly it was for the best otherwise the story would not of formed the way it did. Sally would drink extreme measurements of alcohol until she cannot remember her own name, and try her luck with the next gentleman.

What's happened now for them to want it?

Sallys buzz from her drug has made her want to perform more lively. Sally cannot stop speaking from the energy that her 'magic powder' has given her. Knowing that  Cliff is travelling from America has intrigued Sally hoping he may have connections to possibly fuel her dream.Cliff is a author which means he is educated and in that time period you had to have some money to be educated. Indicating he may have money Which is possibly why Sally was almost forcing herself upon him. Sally may also be wanting Max to get jealous which may want her to try and seduce Max more to make her more desirable possibly? Sally hopes Cliff can help her escape from this lifestyle.

Why do they want it justification for their actions?

Sally performs seductively as she has just had a few lines of cocaine which makes her whole body tingle with energy. Her heart rushes fast, her eyes open wide her body moves swiftly. Her voice slurs making the performance extremely intriguing to watch. Sally wants to seduce Cliff  to earn money. She is a prostitute that is how she earns her money. Or possibly she is attempting to seduce Cliff to make her latest acquaintance jealous, to see if there are any emotions there for her or if she is just someone he sleeps with. She could also be trying to seduce Cliff in hope he will extend her social circle. As moving from England being a Bright young thing, then coming to Berlin with no trust fund and no acquaintances Sally must look for other ways to become successful. Sally dresses up in hope someone will cast her to perform in a show or a film. Cocaine helps to numb the fact she is a performer in a striper club.

      What is their motivation/ needs?

Motivation to perform from Sally perhaps get her leg up why? to earn money from Cliff as she almost tries to seduce him with the song.

Sallys motivation in this scene is to perform well and sensually. Why? Sally earns a living from performing at the club. If shes performs a captivating performance she can gain more clients. The better quality the performance perhaps the better clients financially. From her performance she wants sex but in return for money. Her need in this scene is to earn money. She tries to seduce Cliff in this scene in hope he is wealthy and will pay for her services "she has sung to him-almost as though he is the only one in the audience" (act one, scene four). Suggesting she may think he will pay for her. She needs this money as she is struggling for rent, and needs to fund her cocaine addiction, it is the only source of energy Sally gets.

      Figuring out their background.

From this scene I can depict out some of the characters background. As this is the scene where the iconic Cliff and Sally meet.

      Sally.

Sally is a young British performer, confident. We learn she likes putting on a persona "i used to love pretending I was someone else".(Act one,scene4, page 19) We learn she has a love interest Max. Also that she is promiscuous and confident. She's a resereved person when it comes to her personal life "If I want to tell you anything I will"(Act one, Scene four) This indicate that she is treating him as a client. That she play a character on stage only tells people snippets of her life, perhaps for protection? Or maybe she lies about her background? But ironically she is also open about where she lives, her sexual relationships which is odd.

      Cliff.

Cliff is from America (Harrisburg, Pennsylvanian). He is an educated author. Whom is staying in Berlin to write an focus on his novel. We learn he's possibly lived a rather sheltered life as he seems rather surprised when Sally mentions who she is currently sleeping with you. He seems uptight and unsure of his surroundings.

Season year and time of day

The scene states that it is set on New years eve in 1929. So the season is winter. Which means it is cold therefore this affects clothing, hair and the condition of skin.which are all factors I should consider when creating my character. It appears to be night time as the room is dark and the masses seem to party at night especially on New years eve. Considering it is evening time this may effect womens makeup as it will be worn heavily I'm thinking dark eyes and lips. I am guessing it is evening time as that is when the 'creatures of the night' seemed to change into their alter egos. Of being sex hungry, party mammals so to speak. Women wearing fur coats with little underneath getting the men all excited.

      description of scenery and room.

The room is full of numbered tables with 1920s style telephones on them. On the numbered tables are men waiting to voyeur on their prey (the women or men) whatever tickles their fancy. The room is covered in colorful confetti and shiny balloons and paper hats. It's almost set up like a childs party. From this I can tell its set up for a celebration. Above the tables there is a spiral staircase heading towards the tables. There is a stage at the front of the room, the stage has a spotlight pointing towards it. As there is a spotlight on I am guessing the room is dark and is full of hungry men waiting eagerly to see what's on offer. There is a bar full of alcohol situated in the room to fuel the customers.

Although in the scene I have chosen to analysis does not describe the whole setting in great extent. Just from the little description given of the room I can already visualize how the room looks little details like the curtains the shape of the table the type of customers. I can imagine the room being thick with cigarette smoke, wax dripping from lit candles out of a wine bottle. Red velvet chairs, varnished round tables. The walls are covered with decaying posters, from the condensation in the club

The script is really helping me to picture the scene in greater details from my view not a director of a film which shapes the view.

      Women of the 1920's/30's.

Considering the script The Cabaret is based in the 1920's it would be rude not to mention only one of the biggest, most powerful silent movie stars of the 20's. I am choosing to write about Theda as I can look at her hair, makeup and costume which will be historically correct there may even be similarity to Sally Bowles.

      About Theda.

Theda was an American silent cinema actress famous for playing femme fatale roles. Theda was one of the first sex symbols. From this image we can see many charecteristics of which I can take and trial for my historical Sally Bowles.

From this image I can see that long bobs were very much the fashion with pin curls towards the bottom of the hair. I love the adornment in the hair this is something I would like to use in one of my designs. The pearls in the hair communicate Thedas wealth. Her face is extremly palewith little blusher. Her brows are rather thin and staright. She has heavy smoky eyes which I did not know was very 20's. Her lips almost look as though they have been painted on as they are so dainty. I can see from the hue in the picture she has dark lipstick on. From this image I have a better idea of what is historically correct and what is not. As a lot of images are modernised with influences from the selected era.

      Clara Bow.

Clara Bow was a influential silent film American  actress from the 20's. She rose to fame after playing character Plucky Shopgirl in the film "it"; from there on she earned the nickname "it girl". I have chosen to speak about Clara Bow as her look is historically correct yet a lot more subtle in comparison to Thedas look. She has the short bob with tight curls which sort of reminds me of bed hair. I notice she has a prominent middle parting. Again I notice the hair is dark (like sallys). She has thin straight drawn on brows. Subtle eye makeup what looks like red lips and a soft pale complexion. I can imagine Sally looking lie this off stage.

Both of these icons are from the 20's period. Their styles are striking yet different, both portraying the 20's fads. Of which I can experiment with. From looking at period hair and makeup I can see the obvious trends, from this can decide which one would depict my Sally.

      Carole Lombard.

Carole Lombard was a famous American actress from the 20's. ALthough she was not German she was about i the same era and was a huge icon. I have chosen to write about whereas she is what I imagine y Sally Bowles to be like. After all Sally was not German she was British, but in the film she is American so I can take western looks to my character with some German trends.

Analysing this picture I can tell she is from the 20's era. Her bobbed pin curled hair. Her pale sin, thin round brows and dark berry lips. She looks sensual, innocent, and sophisticated how I would imagine my Sally Bowels to look.
