The Bright Young Things. The great expression

"The Bright Young Things" were a memorbale group of socialites from England.“The Roaring Twenties was an era of clinking glasses, clattering automobiles, and big, brassy jazz tunes. Flappers—donning low-cut necklines and close-cropped bobs—smoked cigarettes and sipped cocktails .” (Alison maloney,The Bright Young Things 2013)

The Bright young things were flamboyant, outrageous, promiscuous, savvy, decadent, rebellious and extremely wealthy youth of the 20's-30s. They were the creators of the celebrity cult. They were the creators of club culture. When they partied they partied hard. They drank extreme measurements of alcohol and experimented with every drug under the sun. If there was a party worth talking about they were there making the headlines of the tabloid. For how glamorous their outfits were.

The tabloids loved to talk about them in the gossip columns speaking of how shocking their behavior was. They were the younger generation aristocracy  and middle class who chose to advance their careers through association.

The Bright Young things perhaps rebelled against their decades values as they survived the war could this be their way of celebrating constant partying. Possibly their attitudes began to change as many males died in the war resulting in more women; giving women an opportunity to seize to be independent and powerful. These young woman captured the opportunity to be seen as something other than a tamed, pretty housewife, baby maker. It's time for a change.

Woman began to chop off their locks, pull their skirts up, smear on lipstick, drink excessively and experiment with their sexuality. The 20's was a time for self expression, if anyone expressed themselves it was this decadent group.

Amazingly, it all started with well-bred, modern young girls and their ‘treasure hunts’ around London using the public transport system; buses, trams and tubes. They chased around London, running and shouting and generally making a spectacle of themselves. This in turn led to young men becoming involved and the Bright Young Things took to treasure hunting in fast cars, roaring around the countryside.
These treasure or scavenger hunts evolved further, into weekend house parties, stunt parties and theatrical fancy dress parties. ‘Bring a Bottle’ parties were invented by the Bright Young Things at university in Oxford and Cambridge, as money was often tight for many of the students whose aristocratic families had been hit by death duties and taxes after the War.
The group would dance to jazz and drink the night away. They took drugs such as hashish, cocaine and heroine which fueled their barbaric behavior even more. They even had their own slang the word "darling" was a popular choice along with "divine".

The most popular amongst The Bright Young Things were Stephen Tenannt  the youngest son of the Earl of Glenconnor,  he was born in 1906.He was known for being outrageous in both his clothes and behaviour, it was said he spent most of his life in bed. His style was imaginative, rather like that of Boy George or David Bowie in the late 20th century. He was constantly pursued by the paparazzi. Nancy Mitford, herself one of the party set, is thought to have based the character Cedric in her novel ‘Love in a Cold Climate’ on Stephen.
The "it girl" of the group Elizabeth Ponosonby who loved nothing more than a party sh reportedly drank herself to her death before she hit 40. Brenda Dean Paul was named the "drug addict" of the group by the tabloid papers.
