The novel is like a diary of Berlin from Isherwoods view in the 20s-30s. The book is taken from different views of the characters not only do I find the book to be insightful of the politics of the time and culture. But I find it extremely useful when helping me visualize the characters.
Isherwood describes Sally in the book to be dark and interesting "very large brown eyes"(Isherwood, C.I, 1939. Goodbye to Berlin.. 3rd ed. London: Vintage 1998.) He also references the ever so questionable "emerald green nails". Of which has us all thinking why green? knowing this I can start to create a charecter with just a few details, and of course based on her energetic personality I can start to visualize my character. "I'm the sort of women to take men from their wives." I love this, from this I can begin my charecter analysis. From the novel I have taken Sally to be a strong, childish charecter. She must be attractive, witty, and of course charming. I can show this through make-up and hair. To take someones husband you have to be chrasmatic right? Considering Isherwood describes her as being not so skilled in the performance forte he had a surprisingly deep, husky voice. She sang badly, without any expression, her hands hanging down at her sides – yet her performance was, in its own way, effective because of her startling appearance and her air of not caring a curse of what people thought of her. This makes me believe Sally must be out of the ordinary.
The novel has given me an understanding of the culture, and characters so I can now further my research.
