To further my understanding of the culture I watched the documentary ( Legendary sin cities, Berlin:Metropolis of Vice. This documentary gave ,e a better insight of the cultures sex fad! The documentary went into some detail about the sex culture, and iconic sex symbols.
Art.
In the 1920s in Berlin the art moment was huge. Art like expressive and abstract became popular and considered more high culture than popular culture. With the likes of Otto Dix who was memorable for his expressive self portraits. He was said to create his portraits that showed realism. "I'm not that obsessed with making representations of ugliness. Everything I've seen is beautiful." Otto Dix. This intrigued me although Berlin was gradually turning into a dysfunctional society he still saw beautiful in everything around him. Other famous artist were the likes of Paul Klee, and Max Beckham.

Art deco was another major art movement in the 20's. Art decco was architecture in the 20's using symmetrically instead of asymmetrical It was mainly used on buildings it gave the buildings a modern look."In Germany two variations of Art Deco flourished in the 1920s and 30s: The Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) employed the same curving horizontal lines and nautical motifs that are known as Streamline Moderne in the Anglophone world. While Neue Sachlichkeit was rather austere and reduced (eventually merging with the Bauhaus style), Expressionist architecture came up with a more emotional use of shapes, colors and textures, partly reinterpreting shapes from the German and Baltic Brick Gothic style."(Wikipedia. Sex.
The 20's in Berlin became the new Paris. It was the sex capital of Europe. By day Berlin looked like a normal city. After 5 the whole place turned into strip clubs, and red light areas for pleasure seekers. On every corner there was a prostitute of some fetish waiting to earn some money. Women of all backgrounds and classes. This could of been as Berlin was in a financial state after the war. This time was soon known as "the depression". There was a woman for every fetish even pregnant women. It was mentioned that women of s&m scene wore yellow shoe laces on their knee high boots. I found this to be particularly interested why yellow? What does yellow represent in Berlin in this time? After the war it seemed there was a huge global celebration. Women began to rebel against society which is where the bob came from. Dresses began to rise up the leg to show they are equal to men they can dress how they want. If they want sex they can have it. It should not just be something demanded by the dominant male.
A symbol of this era I wanted to speak about was Clare Waldoff. She was seen as a huge sexual icon. Not because of her looks, but she was the first admitted lesbian. She inspired women to play with their sexuality. To experiment with each other. She also taught women they do not have to conform to society ideology you can dress as you please. Clare dressed very androgyny possibly to show her dominance in society? Clare was described as having "wiry red hair" this could be reflecting her strong personality.
