Women of the 1920's/30's.

Considering the script The Cabaret is based in the 1920's it would be rude not to mention only one of the biggest, most powerful silent movie stars of the 20's. I am choosing to write about Theda as I can look at her hair, makeup and costume which will be historically correct there may even be similarity to Sally Bowles.

About Theda.

Theda was an American silent cinema actress famous for playing femme fatale roles. Theda was one of the first sex symbols. From this image we can see many charecteristics of which I can take and trial for my historical Sally Bowles.

From this image I can see that long bobs were very much the fashion with pin curls towards the bottom of the hair. I love the adornment in the hair this is something I would like to use in one of my designs. The pearls in the hair communicate Thedas wealth. Her face is extremly palewith little blusher. Her brows are rather thin and staright. She has heavy smoky eyes which I did not know was very 20's. Her lips almost look as though they have been painted on as they are so dainty. I can see from the hue in the picture she has dark lipstick on. From this image I have a better idea of what is historically correct and what is not. As a lot of images are modernised with influences from the selected era.

Clara Bow.

Clara Bow was a influential silent film American  actress from the 20's. She rose to fame after playing character Plucky Shopgirl in the film "it"; from there on she earned the nickname "it girl". I have chosen to speak about Clara Bow as her look is historically correct yet a lot more subtle in comparison to Thedas look. She has the short bob with tight curls which sort of reminds me of bed hair. I notice she has a prominent middle parting. Again I notice the hair is dark (like sallys). She has thin straight drawn on brows. Subtle eye makeup what looks like red lips and a soft pale complexion. I can imagine Sally looking lie this off stage.

Both of these icons are from the 20's period. Their styles are striking yet different, both portraying the 20's fads. Of which I can experiment with. From looking at period hair and makeup I can see the obvious trends, from this can decide which one would depict my Sally.

Carole Lombard.

Carole Lombard was a famous American actress from the 20's. ALthough she was not German she was about i the same era and was a huge icon. I have chosen to write about whereas she is what I imagine y Sally Bowles to be like. After all Sally was not German she was British, but in the film she is American so I can take western looks to my character with some German trends.

Analysing this picture I can tell she is from the 20's era. Her bobbed pin curled hair. Her pale sin, thin round brows and dark berry lips. She looks sensual, innocent, and sophisticated how I would imagine my Sally Bowels to look.
